Over the coming weeks and months, I would like to review several methods of Bible study with our group, namely:

  • Exegesis Careful interpretation of the biblical text to uncover its original meaning in context.

  • Analytical Bible Study Breaking down scripture into smaller parts to examine details, structure, and themes for deeper understanding.

  • Systematic Bible Study Organizing study by topics or doctrines across the entire Bible to build a coherent, comprehensive understanding.

  • Expository Bible Study Explaining and teaching scripture verse-by-verse, focusing on the clear presentation of biblical truths.

There are seven key benefits to Analytical Bible Study:

  1. Deeper Scripture Insight

  2. Stronger Doctrine

  3. Sharper Discernment

  4. Clearer Teaching

  5. Spiritual Growth

  6. Confidence in the Word

  7. Smarter Study Tools

Every Christian can practice good analytical Bible study. As you grow in this area, you may also explore other methods such as exegesis and systematic study, which naturally lead into exposition—sermons or teaching Scripture.

Sermonizing: When delivering a sermon, it is helpful to learn and use the technique of alliteration.

John 3:16 example:

1. Analytical Bible Study – “What does the text say?”John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son...”Key elements: God’s love (cause), His giving (action), belief (condition), and eternal life (result).Structure: God acts; we respond in belief and receive life.

2. Exegesis – “What did this mean to the original audience?”God loving “the world” (including Gentiles) was shocking.“Only begotten Son” points to Jesus’ divine uniqueness. Faith meant full trust in Christ—not tradition or law.Message: Salvation is for all who believe, not just the Jews.

3. Exposition – “How does this apply today?”God’s love reaches everyone. Faith in Jesus leads to eternal life.Preaching Point: The gospel invites all. God gave, we believe, and we live."God gave His best so we could receive eternal life through faith in Christ."

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.”

 — James 1:5
