Salutation


  1. Paul greets the church. Galatians 1:1

    1. Paul addresses —

      1. His calling (his authority)

      2. His Apostleship not by the will of men — but by Jesus Christ

      3. And God the Father who raised Jesus from the dead.

  2. Paul includes all the brethren who are with him. Galatians 1:2

    1. Names unknown but could be the likes of Titus (Gal 2:1)

    2. And addresses the churches of Galatia (plural)

      1. Grace by to you and peace from God the Father. Galatians 1:3

  3. Paul writes grace be to you and peace from God the Father

    1. Paul reminds them of the relationship they share together—

      1. Who gave himself for our sins — v.4

  4. Paul finishes the salutation with—To whom be glory for every and ever. Amen

  5. Paul rebukes the brethren at Galatia. Galatians 1:6-10

    1. Paul's warnings:

      1. I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him — v.6

      2. but there be some that trouble you — v.7

      3. let him be accursed. — v.8

      4. let him be accursed. — v.9 (twice)

      5. For do I now persuade me, or God? — v.10

  6. Paul's authority on the Scripture — gospel (v.11-17)

    1. Divine calling:

      1. But I certify you, brethren... not after man — v.11

      2. For I neither received it of man — v.12

      3. I persecuted the church of God (Paul prev.) — v.13

      4. Profited in the Jews religion — v.14

      5. Called me by his grace — v.15

      6. To reveal his Son in me — v.16

      7. Neither went I up — v.17

  7. Paul's independence (v.18-24)

    1. Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to see Peter — v.18

    2. Afterwards Paul heads to the regions of Syria and Cilicia. — v.21

      1. Paul is unknown here by face. — v.22

      2. Paul presents his testimony to the brethren and they glorify God in him. — v.24

Paul's second visit to Jerusalem


  1. Paul describes his second visit to Jerusalem — "Then fourteen (14) years I went up again to Jerusalem". Galatians 2:1

    1. He mentions Barnabas and Titus

    2. He went up by revelation (of the Spirit?), and presented the Gospel in which he preached unto the Gentiles — Galatians 2:2

    3. Titus did not feel compelled to be circumcised — Galatians 2:3

      1. Not required for the Gospel

    4. He mentions false brethren who came in privily — Galatians 2:4

    5. In verses 6–8, Paul speaks of his calling and the authority given to him to preach the Gospel directly to the Gentiles (i.e., the heathen). — Galatians 2:6-8

    6. James, Cephas, and John—the recognized leaders in Jerusalem—acknowledged Paul’s calling and the gospel entrusted to him for the uncircumcised, and they extended the right hand of fellowship to Paul and Barnabas. — Galatians 2:9

    7. There is a mutual agreement to remember the poor.

  2. Paul confronts Peter at Antioch — Galatians 2:11

    1. Peter ate with the Gentiles but later separated himself — Galatians 2:12

      1. For fear of the circumcision.

    2. Peter influenced the others to follow him — Galatians 2:13

    3. Paul addresses Peter in front of them all — Galatians 2:14

      1. Paul is dealing Peter's hypocrisy.

  3. Paul teaches that both Jews and Gentiles are justified by faith in Jesus Christ — Galatians 2:15–16

    1. He warns against returning to the Law and failing to live in the liberty of Christ — Galatians 2:17–18

    2. Key verse: “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me.” — Galatians 2:19

    3. He concludes: “I do not frustrate the grace of God.” — Galatians 2:21
